About the fish at Lake Wohlford
The trout fishing is improving as the water begins to clear. The upcoming plant should help to liven things up. Some anglers have come back with limits fishing the shallow water on the east end. Powerbait (yellows and greens), salmon eggs, and inflated nightcrawlers are some of the top baits
The Largemouth Bass are getting ready to spawn. They respond well to swimbaits, crawdads, and dark colored plastics.
Crappie move in close to shore in the early morning hours and on overcast days. Crappie are most often caught on mini-jigs or live golden shiners.
Catfish continue to be caught throughout the lake. Lake Wohlford cats prefer mackerel, shrimp, or chicken liver.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. Contest winners must legally catch their fish at Lake Wohlford and have it weighed in by a Wohlford Ranger on our scale. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at 760-839-4346.
