County of San Diego Hazardous Materials Division Information for New Businesses

The Hazardous Materials Division (HMD) of the Department of Environmental Health is the Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) for the County of San Diego and is responsible for regulating facilities that: 
  • Handle or store Hazardous Materials in quantities equal to or greater than 55 gallons of a liquid, 500 lbs. of a solid, and/or 200 cubic feet of a compressed gas.
  • Generate or treat Hazardous Wastes in any quantity.
  • Generate or treat Medical Waste in any quantity.
  • Have the capacity to store at least 1,320 gallons of Aboveground Petroleum.
  • Own or operate an Underground Storage Tank.

If your facility does any of the listed waste activities, please reach out to the HMD as it may require a permit or registration.
